The Dubai Traffic Department has issued tickets to 9,130 violators who crossed the red signal in the first four months of 2017, according to a senior police official.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director-general of the traffic department at Dubai Police, explained that jumping the red signal is considered one of the most serious traffic violations.

"The statistics confirm that accidents from jumping red signals are the most dangerous and often cause death or serious injuries, especially when vehicles come from other directions. The cars that cross the red signals are often speeding, which increases the number of deaths or degree of injuries if a collision takes place."

He said that January witnessed the highest number of violations where the police recorded 2,596 offences, followed by April with 2,259 violations, and March with 2,168 violations. The Dubai Police had installed 28 radars in 2016, which can capture images of violators before entering the intersection.

He said the traffic police had installed mobile radars and Al Burj radars on the streets across the city targeting reckless young drivers and have also launched a driving awareness campaign titled 'Desert without blood'.
