Indian authorities set to ban 22 social media platforms have including Facebook, Twitter.

The step by the government is as a result tensions that have erupted in one of the regions by the Kashmiri youth who reportedly exploit the various social media platforms such as Whatsapp, Facebook and YouTube to reach out to people by live streaming protests or highlighting excesses of government troops.

In a statement, the government says social media is being "misused by anti-national and anti-social elements.

It's being felt that continued misuse of social networking sites and instant messaging services is likely to be detrimental to the interests of peace and tranquility in the stat".

An official with Kashmir's state-owned telecom company, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd noted that engineers were still working on shutting down the 22 sites, including Facebook and Twitter, but so far had been unable to do so without freezing the internet across the Himalayan region.
